Default Ideal Secondary Profession?

Before anyone wails on me, i've done some googling and such, but i've been unable to find anything that i understand as i'm completely new to guild wars, all of the terms, abbreviations and such are just going over my head.

With that said, i'm looking for an ideal secondary profession for my Ritualist, i'd like to choose something somewhat decent early on to avoid the hassle of having to pay(?) to change it in the future, this would help keep things simpler for me.

I was thinking about going with a Warrior or Assassin, but i haven't got a clue!

Also, my main goal for Guild wars is to farm as Many of the HOMs (If that's what they are) for when guild wars 2 is released, of course after getting myself to terms with the game.

Thanks!

P.s i did have a look at the sticky, but i couldn't understand most of it, apologies!

No need to pay real money to change secondary, that is not even possible with real money, a little further into the game there'll be quests to unlock secondaries, or you can pay a fee of 500 in-game gold coins.
Rits are fairly strong on their primary, one of my Rit heroes is still without secondary .... perhaps Mesmer, for e-management, or Nerco, for an interesting variant of the minion-bomber.

Secondaries will change a lot depending on what you're doing.

Assassin is allways a good choice in the start. I never make any other choice really unless it's for a specific build. It provides you with a very strong defence at the lower levels!

1. What Secondary Profession should I choose?
The truthful answer to this question is that at the point where you ask it, it doesn't really matter what second profession you choose. While it's true that the most effective builds require specific second professions, you get the opportunity to change your second profession fairly early on in the three campaigns. So choose whichever Second profession you feel like, it will easily be enough to get you to the stage where you can change it.
from the FAQ, it doesn't matter.

By money i meant in-game cash, sorry, should've made that clear!

I gave gwpvx a look, but everything just seemed.. Confusing. I didn't understand anything i was looking at, all this "Bomber" stuff, all i can think of is that it's to do with nuking, that's all i managed to get for it, there's no real identification on what would be more suitable for what i'm after though.#

I'm mostly after something that can take quite a beating and is able to hold his own against some of the harder content the game has to offer, for this i'm thinking maybe a Ritualist & Warrior would be the more ideal choice? Would choosing a warrior as my secondary profession even change anything? BY giving me more defencive abilities or letting me wear plate armor for example?

Thanks for the swift replies!

Same armor, as I mentioned earlier assassin has the best low level defencive abilities.

I'd be tempted to go either Rt/Me for energy management or Rt/A personally.

Although, as has been said, at this point it doesn't really matter which you choose, just pick one which appeals to you.

Personally I chose Rt/Me when I created my ritualist, but I knew where I wanted to go with it already.

paying gold for changing professions isn't a really bad thing. first cause it is for unlocking, so you you only have to pay it once for every secondary profession (beside your first secondary wich is unlocked for free), secondly cause have unlocked every profession makes it easier to load builds. besides that, it doesn't cost too much to unlock different secondairy's.

So you pick your secondairy profession only for the first part of the game (beside prophecy's it isn't really far in the game).

Some do not's when it comes to picking a secondairy profession.
1: pick monk so you can heal yourself (not advisable in most cases, as a warrior you have to expect being mocked on a lot).
2: pick ranger so you can bring a pet.

Basicly in the first part of the game it doesn't really matter. best is to not use skills from secondairy professions anyways when you just started the game.

Defense? Assassin? hahahaha. Don't waste your secondary for such crap, thats why you travel in teams. Let healers and prot buffers handle defense.

The only build rits have that really utilize their secondary (other than AP which is MUCH later in the game) is a Rit/Necromancer minion bomber. Its a decent gimmick and can be run at low levels if thats your thing. Every other Rit build uses 100% rit skills or nearly so.

Really, your secondary doesn't matter. As a new player you should use exactly 0 skills from your secondary until you are very experienced and know what you are doing, because 99% of the skills your could use from your secondary are worse than what you could use from your primary. This is doubly certain at lower levels, because you don't have the attribute points to split and do multiple things.

The point at which you can change professions is just a little after you get to lvl 20, which is 5-15 hours into the campaign depending on how fast you go.

I say, choose secondary by the skills you want, especially the pve-only skills. For instance, Necrosis (Sunspear) deals 80 damage and has a 2 second recharge. Sunspear and Allegiance skills are usually profession dependent.

Yeah, as others mention here it's just 5 platinum you have to pay in order to unlock all profession for a character. So it's not really that big of a deal

Default Secondary for elite skill captures.

When you have a full stable of Heroes, it is nice to have the elite skills available. You can capture them from a defeated boss, but only if you have that profession. I like to switch professions depending on what I need to accomplish. If you want a cool pet for your Ranger alter ego, or just like trying out the other skills. I do use Necromancer a lot, even for my Heroes.

have fun!
